HYDERABAD , GTNS | September 7, 2026 : Telangana’s Assembly session opened on Monday amid a dramatic confrontation between the ruling Congress and opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi.
BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao and former minister T. Harish Rao were detained after BRS legislators attempted to protest outside the Assembly wearing black T-shirts carrying political messages against the Congress government.
The confrontation has provided the BRS with a fresh platform to accuse the government of restricting opposition protest. The party subsequently called for statewide demonstrations against the action.
The Congress government, meanwhile, faces a number of issues that the opposition is expected to raise during the session.
These include land-related disputes involving 22-A properties, fee reimbursement, the government’s performance during its first 1,000 days and questions concerning the participation of former chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao in Assembly proceedings.
The session could therefore become an important political battleground for all three major forces in the state—the Congress, BRS and BJP.
For Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the Assembly provides an opportunity to defend his government’s record. For BRS, the session is a chance to revive its opposition campaign and challenge the Congress over promises made during the previous electoral contest.
The BJP is also expected to use the political confrontation to expand its presence in the state’s opposition space.
