CM Trophy 2026 begins in Cuttack as six franchises create a wider competitive platform for players from across the state
CUTTACK: The historic Barabati Stadium moved into the spotlight once again on Sunday as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the Odisha T20 League CM Trophy 2026, opening a 10-day competition designed to bring Odisha’s emerging cricket talent into a stronger state-level competitive environment.
The significance of the tournament extends beyond the opening ceremony. With six franchises representing different parts of Odisha, the league provides a structured platform through which players can compete under professional T20 conditions while carrying the identity of their respective regions.
The 2026 edition features Bhubaneswar Tigers, Puri Titans, Keonjhar Miners, Rourkela Superstars, Sambalpur Warriors and Kataka Panthers. The competition has 17 matches scheduled at Barabati Stadium between September 20 and September 29, including the qualifier and final.
For Odisha cricket, the regional spread of the teams is one of the notable features of the competition. It places players from different cricketing centres into the same tournament structure and gives selectors, coaches and supporters an opportunity to observe talent in a competitive environment.
The league also brings experienced cricket personalities into the tournament ecosystem. Former India players Suresh Raina and Debashish Mohanty have been associated with the competition as brand ambassadors.
But the larger test for the CM Trophy will be what happens beyond the ten-day schedule.
A successful state league is ultimately measured by whether players receive sustained competitive opportunities, whether performances translate into higher levels of domestic cricket and whether talent from less prominent cricketing centres gets sufficient visibility.
That makes the tournament more than a series of matches. It is part of the broader question of how Odisha can build a deeper cricketing pipeline.
Barabati itself provides a significant backdrop to that effort. The historic Cuttack venue, long associated with major cricket matches, is now being used as the principal stage for the state’s franchise-based T20 competition. All 17 matches of this edition are scheduled at the stadium.
The opening fixture on September 20 features Sambalpur Warriors against defending champions Kataka Panthers, setting the competitive tone for the new season.
For young cricketers, the opportunity is clear: perform consistently, handle pressure and convert a state-level platform into the next stage of their careers.
For Odisha cricket administrators, the challenge is equally clear: ensure that the league becomes part of a continuing talent-development system rather than an isolated annual event.
The CM Trophy has therefore opened not merely another T20 season at Barabati, but another test of Odisha’s ability to turn regional cricketing potential into sustained competitive strength.
