Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal and Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) recipients and eligible family members to access railway travel through a new digital concession system
GTNS , SEPTEMBER 16, 2026 ,NEW DELHI: A new railway benefit for India’s gallantry award recipients is set to turn military recognition into a practical, lifelong facility, with the Ministry of Defiance approving lifetime travel concessions across Indian Railways for specified Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal and Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) awardees.
The decision covers not only eligible award recipients but also their spouses, while the parents of unmarried posthumous gallantry awardees have also been brought within the benefit framework.
The facility will be available in First Class, Second AC and AC Chair Car, giving eligible beneficiaries access to railway travel across the country.
FROM MEDAL TO EVERYDAY RECOGNITION
Military gallantry awards formally recognise acts of courage and sacrifice. The new railway facility adds a practical dimension to that recognition.
Instead of being limited to a ceremonial honour, the approved benefit will remain available throughout the eligible beneficiary’s lifetime, creating a continuing travel entitlement for awardees and specified family members.
The inclusion of parents of unmarried personnel who received gallantry awards posthumously also places the families of those who did not return from service within the scope of the new facility.
A DIGITAL SYSTEM REPLACES THE PAPER TRAIL
One of the significant features of the initiative is the move towards a fully digital process.
Eligible beneficiaries can register online through the Indian Railway Concession Card Portal (IRCCP). Following authentication, the system will generate e-Passes online.
The process is designed to connect beneficiary verification directly with railway travel entitlement, reducing dependence on conventional concession documentation.
NOVEMBER 1 MARKS THE NEXT STAGE
The railway benefit will move into the ticket-booking stage from November 1, 2026.
From that date, eligible beneficiaries will be able to use the facility while booking tickets through the IRCTC web portal, after completing the required registration and authentication process.
The timeline effectively creates a phased rollout—first establishing the beneficiary database and authentication mechanism, followed by online railway reservation.
WHO COMES UNDER THE NEW FACILITY?
The approved framework covers:
- Sena Medal (Gallantry) awardees
- Nau Sena Medal (Gallantry) awardees
- Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) awardees
- Spouses of eligible awardees
- Parents of unmarried posthumous awardees
Travel will be permitted in the specified railway classes—First Class, Second AC and AC Chair Car—under the applicable concession arrangements.
RECOGNITION EXTENDS BEYOND THE PARADE GROUND
The significance of the decision lies in its continuing nature.
A gallantry medal is awarded for a specific act or record of courage, but the railway facility creates a benefit that remains connected to the recipient long after the award ceremony.
For families of unmarried personnel who died after earning the gallantry distinction, the provision for parents gives the recognition a family dimension as well.
THE RAILWAY NETWORK AS A NATIONAL BENEFIT
Indian Railways connects communities across the country, making the travel concession a nationwide facility rather than a location-specific benefit.
With online registration, digital authentication and e-Pass generation, the Defence Ministry’s initiative also brings the administration of the concession into a more technology-driven framework.
For eligible gallantry awardees and their families, the next step is therefore digital: registration, verification and, from November 1, 2026, online ticket booking through the railway system.
