September 06/26/GTNS Kaniha, Angul The legacy of the Prajamandal movement came alive at Kaniha on Sunday as the 89th Prajamandal Day was observed with a focus on remembering the sacrifices of freedom fighters and inspiring the younger generation.
Organised by the Swadhinata Sangrami Memorial Trust, Kaniha, the programme brought together public representatives, administrators, industry officials, students and families of freedom fighters to remember an important chapter of the region’s history.
The highlight of the event was the felicitation of around 90 families of martyrs and freedom fighters. The recognition was aimed at honouring the sacrifices made by their forebears during the struggle for justice, equality and freedom.
The Prajamandal movement holds a significant place in the history of Talcher. The historic mobilisation of people in the region during the pre-Independence period reflected growing opposition to exploitation, injustice and feudal oppression. The movement also strengthened the demand for people’s rights and a more accountable system of governance.
Talcher MLA Braja Kishore Pradhan, Pallahara MLA Ashok Mohanty and Angul MLA Pratap Chandra Pradhan attended the programme and paid tribute to the freedom fighters. Talcher Sub-Collector Ashish Ranjan Sahu also joined the event.
The organisers placed special emphasis on connecting young people with the history of the movement. Various competitions were conducted among students, with winners receiving prizes. The initiative sought to make historical awareness more meaningful for the younger generation and encourage students to understand the values behind the freedom struggle.
The event also highlighted the continuing role of institutions and industries in preserving local heritage and contributing to community development.
Ajay Singh Yadav, Chief General Manager and Head of Project, NTPC Talcher Kaniha, recalled the courage, unity and patriotism displayed by the people who participated in the movement. He said NTPC’s association with the Prajamandal Day celebration has continued for nearly three decades.
NTPC’s participation was also linked to its broader community initiatives in areas such as education, skill development, healthcare, social welfare and local development. The programme underlined the idea that industrial growth and social responsibility can move together.
MCL Kaniha General Manager Dinesh Mali was also present during the observance.
Beyond the ceremonial tributes, the celebration carried a wider message: preserving history is not only about remembering the past but also about passing its values to future generations. The participation of students and the felicitation of martyr families gave the programme a strong inter-generational dimension.
