Bhubaneswar ,GTNS | September 09, 2026 : Odisha is poised for a major expansion of its railway network with the approval of a significant capacity-enhancement project on the Jharsuguda–Kharagpur corridor.
The proposed development will expand the existing railway infrastructure to a four-track corridor, aimed at improving the movement of trains and strengthening connectivity between Odisha and neighbouring states.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has cleared three major railway projects covering parts of Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
The projects are expected to provide better rail connectivity across several districts and support the transportation needs of both passengers and industries. Around 56 lakh people in 14 districts across the five states are expected to benefit from the approved railway developments.
For Odisha, the Jharsuguda–Kharagpur project is particularly important because the corridor serves areas with substantial industrial and freight movement. Additional railway capacity is expected to help reduce congestion and facilitate faster transportation of goods.
The expansion could also strengthen logistics networks, improve access to markets and contribute to economic activity in the region.
The latest approval is being seen as an important step towards building stronger railway infrastructure and supporting Odisha’s growing industrial and commercial requirements.
