Former Odisha Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti, remembering the freedom fighter’s contribution to India’s struggle for independence and his enduring commitment to non-violence.

In a message marking Gandhi Jayanti, Patnaik described Gandhi as a leading advocate of peace and non-violence. He said the principles associated with Gandhi’s life and public movement continue to have relevance beyond social, religious and national boundaries.

Patnaik highlighted ahimsa, peace, tolerance and dedication to the freedom movement as values that continue to inspire people across generations.

His message came on October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, which is observed across India as Gandhi Jayanti. The day is marked through tributes and programmes highlighting Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence and public service.

Gandhi’s role in India’s freedom movement and his advocacy of non-violent resistance remain central to the country’s modern political history. His ideas have also influenced civil-rights and peace movements beyond India.

Patnaik’s Gandhi Jayanti message placed particular emphasis on the continuing relevance of these principles in public life, calling attention to values that have remained associated with Gandhi’s legacy decades after his death.
