NEW DELHI: GTNS, SEPTEMBER 10, 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to hold high-level discussions in New Delhi ahead of the BRICS Summit, with defiance cooperation expected to remain an important part of the bilateral agenda.
The proposed engagement comes at a significant moment for India-Russia strategic relations, as both sides continue to explore ways to strengthen long-standing defence cooperation and expand collaboration in advanced military technologies.
Among the issues expected to attract attention are the future delivery schedule of Russia’s S-400 air defence systems and cooperation surrounding the development of next-generation BrahMos missile capabilities.
The S-400 programme remains an important component of India’s air-defence architecture, while BrahMos represents one of the most prominent examples of India-Russia defence technology cooperation.
The discussions are also expected to reflect a broader effort by New Delhi and Moscow to move beyond traditional defence procurement towards deeper technology cooperation, joint development and long-term strategic partnerships.
The Modi-Putin engagement is taking place just ahead of the BRICS Summit scheduled in New Delhi on September 12–13, giving the meeting additional diplomatic significance.
Beyond defence, the two leaders could also exchange views on wider bilateral cooperation and major international developments, as India and Russia seek to maintain strong strategic engagement amid a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.
For New Delhi, the meeting will provide an opportunity to assess the next phase of defence cooperation with Moscow while continuing to pursue an independent and diversified foreign policy.
