September 08, 2026 | GTNS : Vadodara: India’s indigenous bullet train project has reached a significant stage, with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announcing that the country’s domestically developed high-speed train is expected to enter track testing by May or June next year.
Speaking at the ‘NaMo for Viksit Bharat’ event in Vadodara, Vaishnaw said the first body frame of the train had recently been completed and sent for squeeze testing. The process is aimed at evaluating the train’s structural strength and safety before it moves into full-scale trials.
The Railway Minister said the testing phase is expected to continue for around two to four months. Once the necessary trials and safety procedures are completed successfully, the bullet train is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The development marks an important step in India’s efforts to strengthen its domestic capabilities in high-speed railway technology. The indigenous train is being developed as part of the country’s broader push towards advanced engineering, manufacturing and self-reliance in the railway sector.
The high-speed rail network is also expected to transform travel between major cities in western India. Vaishnaw said the service could eventually reduce the Vadodara-Mumbai journey to approximately 90 minutes, offering passengers a substantially faster alternative to conventional rail travel.
The project is being closely watched as India seeks to expand its high-speed rail infrastructure and develop technology that can potentially be deployed on future routes.
The forthcoming testing phase will be a crucial milestone. Successful trials could strengthen India’s position in high-speed rail manufacturing and pave the way for greater domestic participation in future bullet train projects.
