CJP delegation reaches Parliament Street Police Station, demanding stronger action after alleged assault during Jantar Mantar protest
NEW DELHI: GTNS, SEPTEMBER 10, 2026; A fresh confrontation over law and order in the national capital has emerged after Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) spokesperson Saurav Das questioned the handling of a case linked to Nishu Azad and an alleged assault on her father during a protest at Jantar Mantar.
Das, along with CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka, reached Parliament Street Police Station earlier this month, demanding stronger legal action against Swatantra Bhardwaj, a social-media influencer accused in connection with the alleged assault.
What CJP is demanding
According to reports, CJP argued that the initial FIR did not adequately reflect the seriousness of the alleged attack. The organisation pressed police to consider additional provisions, including those under the SC/ST Act, and sought medical assessment to determine whether more serious charges could be applicable.
A separate complaint concerning alleged rape threats involving Nishu Azad has also been received by police, according to the same reporting.
Police action after the protest
The pressure campaign resulted in police adding relevant provisions of the SC/ST Act to the assault case, while a medical examination was to be conducted to assess whether an attempt-to-murder provision could be considered.
Bhardwaj was subsequently apprehended in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, according to reports, following allegations connected to the Delhi protest case.
Saurav Das raises wider law-and-order questions
The CJP spokesperson has used the episode to raise broader questions about policing, protest security and accountability in Delhi.
The dispute has particularly focused attention on the security environment surrounding Jantar Mantar, a designated location for demonstrations in the capital, and on how authorities respond when allegations of violence arise during protests.
However, allegations made by political groups or individuals remain allegations unless established through investigation or judicial proceedings.
CJP faces separate legal controversy
The latest confrontation comes amid another legal dispute involving CJP leaders. BJP national spokesperson and senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia has filed a ₹2 crore defamation suit against Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka over allegedly defamatory social-media posts.
On September 10, the Delhi High Court encouraged the CJP leaders to consider voluntarily removing the disputed posts. The leaders agreed to take them down within 24 hours.
The developments place CJP at the centre of two separate controversies—one involving its campaign over the Nishu Azad case and another involving allegations of defamatory online content.
For Delhi Police, the Nishu Azad episode has become a test of how effectively allegations of violence at public demonstrations are investigated and acted upon.
