Ethiopia’s top diplomat joins the high-level BRICS gathering as New Delhi prepares for the 18th summit
NEW DELHI: GTNS, SEPTEMBER 10, 2026; Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos has arrived in New Delhi as India prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit, bringing another senior member of the expanded grouping to the Indian capital ahead of the leaders’ meeting.
Timothewos, who has served as Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs since October 2024, is representing one of the countries that joined the expanded BRICS grouping in 2024.
Ethiopia’s role in the expanded BRICS
Ethiopia’s participation reflects the growing geographic and economic reach of BRICS. The grouping now has 11 full members, following the expansion that brought Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE into the bloc in 2024, with Indonesia joining in 2025.
The arrival of Ethiopia’s foreign minister comes as representatives of member and partner countries converge on New Delhi for discussions covering international affairs, economic cooperation, development and the future direction of the grouping.
Focus on a changing global order
The 2026 summit is taking place against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions, changing trade patterns and debates over the role of emerging economies in global decision-making.
For India, the expanded BRICS platform provides an opportunity to strengthen engagement with Africa and other developing economies while pursuing cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy, technology and development.
New Delhi at the centre of BRICS diplomacy
India is hosting the summit during its 2026 BRICS chairship. The leaders’ summit is scheduled for September 12–13 in New Delhi, with extensive preparations underway for the arrival of senior foreign leaders and delegations.
The arrival of Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos adds to the growing diplomatic activity in the capital ahead of the summit, which is expected to test how effectively the enlarged BRICS grouping can coordinate despite differences among its members.
