Bengaluru, GTNS | September 09, 2026: A routine exercise to scrutinise electoral records in Karnataka has brought an unusual case involving one of India’s most celebrated scientists. Bharat Ratna awardee Prof. C N R Rao, 92, has received a notice for identity verification after officials detected a variation in the spelling of his name in electoral records.
The issue surfaced during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s electoral rolls. As part of the verification process, discrepancies in voter entries are being examined to establish the accuracy of individual records.
According to the information provided, Rao’s name appears differently in two electoral-roll records. The 2002 roll carries the entry as “Prof C N R Rao”, whereas the present roll reportedly records it as “Proff C N R Rao”, with an additional letter in the title.
The spelling variation has led to the eminent scientist being called for a hearing so that his identity and electoral particulars can be verified. The notice refers to the discrepancy as a self-name mismatch.
While the matter concerns only a difference in the recorded spelling, the episode illustrates how electoral-roll verification can bring even long-standing entries under scrutiny when inconsistencies are identified.
Prof. Rao is internationally recognised for his extensive contribution to chemistry and scientific research. Over a career spanning several decades, he has played a prominent role in advancing India’s scientific capabilities and has received some of the country’s highest honours, including the Bharat Ratna.
The development has also drawn attention to the importance of maintaining precise voter records. Electoral databases contain millions of entries, and discrepancies in names, spellings or other particulars can require additional verification before records are finalised.
The hearing will provide an opportunity for the authorities to establish the correct identity details and address the variation appearing in the electoral documents.
The case involving Prof. Rao has consequently become an unusual example of the detailed scrutiny being undertaken during Karnataka’s electoral-roll revision process.
