India Launches ‘Sagar Manthan’ to Advance Indigenous Ocean Science and Deep-Sea Research
New Delhi ,GTNS | September 09, 2026 GTNS | September 09, 2026 : India has strengthened its ocean-science infrastructure with the launch of ORV Sagar Manthan, a specialised research vessel designed to expand the country’s ability to conduct advanced studies in the marine environment.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh underlined the importance of the vessel, describing its development as a significant achievement in India’s journey towards greater technological self-reliance.
Constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Sagar Manthan represents the growing capability of Indian shipbuilding institutions to deliver highly specialised platforms for scientific and strategic missions. The project carries wider significance under India’s Blue Economy vision. As the country seeks to make greater use of its vast maritime resources while maintaining environmental sustainability, advanced indigenous research infrastructure is becoming increasingly important.
The vessel was launched at the Rishi Bankim Shipyard of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata during a dedicated ship launch and naming ceremony.
The vessel is expected to support a wide range of oceanographic activities, enabling researchers to gather valuable information about marine ecosystems, ocean conditions and underwater resources. Such research can contribute to better scientific understanding as well as the sustainable management of India’s maritime resources.
According to the minister, the project reflects the national emphasis on Atmanirbhar Bharat, particularly in areas involving advanced engineering, shipbuilding and scientific technology.
The importance of ocean research extends beyond scientific discovery. Reliable marine data is increasingly essential for understanding climate patterns, protecting ocean resources, improving maritime planning and supporting India’s long-term interests across the Indian Ocean region.
The launch of Sagar Manthan therefore marks more than the addition of another research vessel. It highlights India’s effort to build an integrated ecosystem in which domestic shipbuilding, scientific research and advanced technology work together.
With specialised research platforms being developed within the country, India is seeking to reduce dependence on overseas capabilities while creating stronger foundations for future marine science and technology programmes.
