Paradip, GTNS, September 8: Newd by ( Debasmita Parida ) With air quality and plastic waste emerging as growing environmental concerns in the industrial town of Paradip, the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), Paradip Municipality, police and district administration have launched a coordinated awareness and enforcement campaign.The special campaign, which began on September 7 and will continue until September 19, focuses on creating greater public awareness while simultaneously taking action against activities contributing to pollution.According to Regional Pollution Control Officer Bibechita Sadangi, road dust, ongoing National Highway expansion work and improper cargo handling at the port are among the major factors contributing to air pollution in the Paradip area.At the same time, emissions from industrial units are being monitored through modern pollution-control and monitoring systems, officials said. The authorities are also focusing on activities outside industrial premises that can have a direct impact on local air quality.As part of the campaign, several public-oriented programmes are being organised across Paradip. These include cleanliness drives in market areas, distribution of eco-kits and cloth bags as alternatives to single-use plastic, demonstrations on solid-waste processing and awareness activities on responsible waste disposal.A special exhibition showcasing traditional Odia food served in biodegradable utensils is also being organised to promote environmentally friendly alternatives. School students are being encouraged to participate in speech competitions on environmental protection, while cleanliness drives are being conducted along the coastline.The administration has also stepped up enforcement against banned plastic products and thermocol-based food containers. Paradip Municipality Executive Officer Abhishek Panda said strict measures are being taken to discourage the use, storage and sale of prohibited plastic materials.The enforcement drive is particularly significant ahead of the upcoming Vishwakarma Puja, when demand for food, decorations and other market products generally increases. Officials said inspections will be intensified in Barapadia and other major market areas to identify warehouses and traders storing or selling illegal plastic items.Raids will be conducted against violators, with confiscation of prohibited materials and fines being imposed as per the applicable rules.Officials said the campaign is aimed not only at enforcement but also at encouraging residents, traders, industries and visitors to adopt more sustainable practices. The combined approach of public awareness, cleanliness initiatives and strict action against violations is expected to strengthen environmental management in Paradip.With the town witnessing extensive industrial, port and infrastructure activity, authorities believe that cooperation from businesses and the general public will be essential to maintaining cleaner surroundings and reducing pollution-related challenges in the region.
