BHUBANESWAR, SEPTEMBER 4: The controversy surrounding the killing of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati has once again come into focus, with the alleged conspiracy angle emerging as a key issue in the government’s position on the case.
Senior Cabinet Minister for Law, Works and Excise Prithviraj Harichandan said the government is taking the matter seriously and has initiated steps towards examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Harichandan expressed confidence that the findings of the commission constituted in connection with the case would come before the public and that those found responsible would face punishment in accordance with the law.
The minister’s remarks have renewed attention on one of the most sensitive episodes associated with Kandhamal, where Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati was killed in 2008 along with four others.
The government’s emphasis on the commission report and the suspected conspiracy has also raised expectations among the Swami’s followers and supporters, who have long sought greater clarity over the circumstances behind the killings.
Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati was known for his activities in the remote areas of Kandhamal, particularly in education, social service, tribal welfare, women’s empowerment, cow protection and preservation of local traditions.
His supporters continue to portray his work as an important contribution to social and cultural activities in the region. They have maintained that his legacy should be carried forward through education, welfare and service to marginalised communities.
With the government now reiterating its commitment to pursuing the matter, attention is likely to remain focused on the commission’s findings and whether they provide fresh answers to questions surrounding the alleged conspiracy.
The government has maintained that any person found guilty through due legal process will be dealt with according to law, keeping the focus on accountability and justice.
