Proceedings over alleged 8.86-acre land transaction move forward; Jharkhand CM rejects prosecution allegations
GTNS | RANCHI | OCTOBER 1, 2026
The legal proceedings involving Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren have moved into the next stage after a Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ranchi framed charges against him in a case linked to an alleged land transaction.
The case centres on 8.86 acres of land in the Bargain area of Ranchi. The Enforcement Directorate has been investigating the alleged illegal acquisition and transfer of the property and has linked the matter to a money-laundering investigation.
Soren appeared before the court through video conferencing. During the proceedings, the allegations were read out before the court, and he rejected them, maintaining that the accusations were baseless and that he was innocent.
The framing of charges is a procedural step in a criminal case and is not a finding of guilt. The prosecution will now present its evidence and witnesses, while the defence will have the opportunity to challenge the allegations during the trial.
The court had already framed charges against the other accused persons in the case. According to reports, 17 people have been named as accused, with Soren being the last against whom charges were formally framed.
The development follows a series of legal challenges by Soren. The Jharkhand High Court had earlier declined to stay the proceedings before the Special PMLA Court, allowing the lower court process to continue.
The trial is expected to move into the evidence stage, with further proceedings scheduled for November 30 according to reports.
The case will now be closely watched as the court examines the prosecution’s evidence and the defence response. The final determination of the allegations will rest with the judicial process.
