HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to Step Down in October; Succession Search Begins

Mumbai, August 30: HDFC Bank Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan has decided not to seek another term and will retire from the country’s largest private-sector bank on October 26, 2026.

The bank disclosed the decision on Saturday, triggering an important leadership transition at one of India’s most systemically important private lenders. Jagdishan became HDFC Bank’s CEO in October 2020 after succeeding longtime chief executive Aditya Puri and was reappointed in 2023.

HDFC Bank now faces the task of identifying and appointing his successor. The process is particularly important because the appointment of a new managing director and CEO requires regulatory approval.

Reports indicate the bank could consider an interim leadership arrangement if a permanent successor is not finalised before Jagdishan’s departure.

Jagdishan’s tenure included the landmark merger of HDFC Ltd with HDFC Bank, which significantly expanded the bank’s scale and changed the structure of India’s financial-services sector.

The leadership transition will therefore be closely watched by investors, analysts and the banking industry.

Why it matters:
HDFC Bank is one of India’s most influential financial institutions, and the choice of its next CEO could have a significant impact on its future strategy and investor sentiment.
