NEW DELHI, GTNS , SEPTEMBER 11, 2026 : Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to use the BRICS platform in New Delhi to underline Moscow’s push for stronger economic and strategic cooperation among emerging economies, as India hosts the 18th BRICS Summit.
For Russia, BRICS has increasingly become an important platform for expanding trade, investment and political coordination beyond traditional Western-led institutions. Moscow’s approach places particular emphasis on greater use of national currencies, stronger financial cooperation and wider economic links among member countries.
Putin’s participation also comes at a time when Russia is seeking deeper engagement with India and other major economies of the Global South. Moscow has consistently described its relationship with New Delhi as a long-term strategic partnership, with energy, defence, technology and trade remaining key areas of cooperation.
The Russian leadership is also expected to stress the importance of a multipolar international system in which major emerging economies have a greater role in global decision-making.
India’s BRICS presidency provides New Delhi with an opportunity to bring economic priorities to the centre of the grouping’s agenda. For Moscow, the summit is equally significant as a platform to expand commercial partnerships and reinforce coordination with countries outside the traditional Western alliance system.
Putin’s BRICS message is therefore likely to focus on economic resilience, sovereign decision-making, expanded trade and a stronger voice for the Global South.
As leaders gather in New Delhi, Russia is positioning BRICS not merely as a diplomatic grouping, but as an increasingly influential platform for reshaping economic and political cooperation in a changing world.
