MUMBAI: GTNS, SEPTEMBER 10, 2026 Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis used a hands-on activity at an environmental workshop to highlight the importance of celebrating Ganeshotsav without placing additional pressure on nature.
Fadnavis participated in the ‘Maha Ganesh Idol Workshop’ organised by the state’s Environment and Climate Change Department, where he personally crafted a Lord Ganesha idol using shadu clay.
The Chief Minister also interacted with children participating in the workshop, turning the event into an awareness exercise focused on environmentally responsible celebrations.
The initiative highlighted the growing emphasis on alternatives that can help reduce the environmental impact associated with festival activities. The use of natural clay for idols is being promoted as part of efforts to encourage more sustainable practices during Ganeshotsav.
Fadnavis reiterated the vision of building a cleaner, greener and sustainable Maharashtra, while encouraging citizens to make environmental responsibility part of their festive traditions.
The workshop also placed children and young people at the centre of the awareness campaign, emphasising that environmental conservation can begin with simple choices made at the community and household level.
Ganeshotsav remains one of Maharashtra’s most prominent cultural celebrations, and efforts to make the festival more environmentally conscious are gaining importance as cities prepare for large-scale celebrations.
The Chief Minister’s participation in the clay-idol workshop has therefore added a public-policy dimension to the campaign for eco-conscious Ganesh celebrations, combining cultural tradition with environmental awareness.
