Moscow is pushing its fifth-generation fighter for India as the two sides explore deeper defence cooperation and technology transfer
NEW DELHI: GTNS, SEPTEMBER 10, 2026; A major defence proposal could come into focus during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with Russia seeking to expand defence cooperation with India through its Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft.
The Su-57 is reportedly among the defence issues expected to feature in discussions between the two leaders during Putin’s India visit for the BRICS Summit. However, there is no confirmation yet that India has decided to purchase the aircraft or that a final contract has been signed.
Russia renews push for Su-57
Russia has been actively promoting the export version of the Su-57E to India. Reports indicate that Moscow is prepared to discuss deeper industrial cooperation, including technology transfer and possible production arrangements in India.
The proposal could fit into India’s broader Make in India defence strategy if New Delhi decides that the Russian aircraft meets its operational and technological requirements.
Why the fighter matters
The Su-57 is Russia’s flagship fifth-generation fighter, designed around stealth, advanced sensors, high manoeuvrability and long-range strike capabilities.
A potential Indian acquisition would therefore represent a significant development in India’s combat-aircraft fleet and could influence the country’s future fighter-modernisation plans.
Russia has also demonstrated the Su-57 internationally, including its recent appearance at an airshow in Egypt, where the aircraft was displayed alongside advanced Russian weapons.
Deal or discussion?
At this stage, it is important to distinguish between Russia’s offer and an actual Indian purchase decision.
Current reports indicate that the Su-57 is part of the wider defence agenda for the Modi-Putin talks, but the size, price, configuration, technology-transfer terms and production arrangements remain subject to negotiations.
Any final agreement would also require India’s established defence procurement and approval processes.
Beyond fighter jets
The Su-57 discussion comes as India and Russia seek to maintain their long-standing strategic partnership across defence, energy, nuclear cooperation, trade and industrial production.
For Moscow, a potential Indian Su-57 programme would be a major international defence opportunity. For New Delhi, the key question will be whether the aircraft and proposed technology partnership can complement India’s long-term goal of building a stronger indigenous aerospace industry.
The Modi-Putin meeting could therefore determine whether the Su-57 remains a Russian proposal or moves closer to becoming a major India-Russia defence project.
