Nirmala Sitharaman reviews India’s Finance Track priorities as member countries discuss financial resilience, local-currency trade and investment cooperation.
MUMBAI ; GTNS | SEPTEMBER 10, 2026: Mumbai is hosting a crucial two-day meeting of BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors as India moves towards the final stage of preparations for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit.
The September 9–10 meeting is an important part of India’s 2026 BRICS chairship and is focused on strengthening financial cooperation among member economies. The Finance Track is being guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
Nirmala Sitharaman Reviews Finance Agenda
Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has reviewed the key outcomes of the BRICS Finance Track with senior officials from the Department of Economic Affairs ahead of the Mumbai meeting.
Her review comes as India seeks to convert its BRICS chairship into practical economic cooperation, with financial stability, investment and stronger links among member economies forming important areas of discussion.
Local Currencies and Financial Cooperation
One of the major issues under discussion is the possibility of expanding the use of national currencies in trade and financial settlements among BRICS countries. The broader objective is to make cross-border transactions more efficient while strengthening the bloc’s resilience to external financial pressures.
The role of the New Development Bank in mobilising capital for development projects is also emerging as an important area of the BRICS financial agenda.
From Mumbai to the Leaders’ Summit
The outcome of the Finance Track discussions could feed into the agenda of the upcoming BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi.
For India, the challenge is to ensure that BRICS cooperation produces practical outcomes in areas such as trade, investment, infrastructure financing and financial stability rather than remaining limited to high-level declarations.

India’s Economic Push
With India holding the BRICS chairship in 2026, the Mumbai meeting provides an important platform for New Delhi to advance its vision of a more resilient and cooperative global economic system.
The discussions are expected to help shape the financial priorities that will reach the leaders’ table during the summit.
