KOLKATA ; GTNS | SEPTEMBER 10, 2026: The Adani Group is preparing for a major expansion of its footprint in West Bengal, with three proposed projects covering healthcare, heritage conservation and urban infrastructure expected to take centre stage later this month.
The projects include a 2,000-bed hospital at New Town, work connected with the restoration of the historic Writers’ Building, and redevelopment of the Kumartuli-Champatala riverfront area.
The proposed initiatives underline the growing interest in large-scale private investment in sectors that have a direct impact on public infrastructure and the urban landscape of Kolkata.
New Town hospital to be a major healthcare project
The proposed 2,000-bed hospital is expected to become one of the most significant components of the group’s Bengal plans.
Reports indicate that the facility will include a substantial provision for free treatment, with 1,000 beds reportedly earmarked for patients who cannot afford treatment.
If implemented as planned, the project could significantly increase access to advanced medical facilities in and around New Town while adding a major private healthcare institution to the region.
Heritage conservation enters the spotlight
The historic Writers’ Building is another major focus. The iconic Kolkata landmark has a long association with Bengal’s administrative and political history and requires specialised conservation alongside modernisation of its infrastructure.
Recent reports say the Adani Group has emerged as the leading contender in the restoration process, following the state government’s efforts to identify an organisation capable of handling the complex heritage project.
Any restoration work will have to balance structural upgrades with preservation of the building’s historic character.
Kumartuli riverfront plans
The third initiative is linked to the riverfront around Kumartuli and Champatala, an area closely associated with Kolkata’s cultural and artistic identity.
The proposed redevelopment is expected to improve the public environment around the ghats while strengthening access and civic infrastructure.
For Kolkata, such a project could have significance beyond physical development, particularly because Kumartuli is internationally known for its traditional idol-making community and cultural heritage.
A wider investment push
Taken together, the three projects represent a diverse investment approach — healthcare infrastructure in New Town, conservation of a historic government landmark and improvement of a culturally important riverfront zone.
The proposed September 24 programme is expected to provide greater clarity on the projects, their implementation plans and timelines.
