Colombo, / INDIA , GTNS | September 09, 2026: India and Sri Lanka are looking to further deepen maritime cooperation, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stressing the importance of protecting sea routes and ensuring freedom of navigation across the Indian Ocean region.
During his engagement at the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence, Singh underlined the strategic importance of maritime security for maintaining regional stability and supporting economic activity across the Indian Ocean.
He said safe and uninterrupted movement through the region’s sea lanes is closely connected with the collective security and prosperity of countries dependent on the Indian Ocean.
India and Sri Lanka, as neighbouring countries with strong maritime links, have significant scope to work together on safeguarding the region from emerging security challenges. Greater coordination between the two countries can contribute to maintaining peace and stability across the wider maritime neighbourhood.
The Defence Minister highlighted the importance of a dependable partnership between the two countries, particularly as the Indian Ocean continues to gain strategic and economic significance.
Singh also described India as a “Vishwa Mitra” — a trusted friend of the world, reaffirming New Delhi’s approach of contributing constructively to stability and security in its neighbourhood.
The Indian position, he indicated, is centred on building partnerships based on mutual trust, respect and shared interests while supporting a secure and peaceful regional environment.
The latest engagement reflects the continuing importance India attaches to its relationship with Sri Lanka and to collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening security across the Indian Ocean.
With maritime trade and connectivity playing a crucial role in regional economic growth, stronger India-Sri Lanka cooperation could further contribute to a stable, open and secure Indian Ocean.
