New Delhi, GTNS/September, 09/26 : India’s freight transportation network has received a major infrastructure push with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating three important sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC).
The newly operational stretches together span around 326 route kilometres and have been developed with an investment exceeding ₹20,700 crore, marking another significant step in expanding India’s dedicated rail freight infrastructure.
The three sections are New Sanand (N)–New Makarpura, New Umbergaon–New Saphale and New Saphale–JNPT. These links are expected to strengthen freight movement along the western industrial corridor and improve connectivity with major logistics and port networks.
Dedicated freight corridors are designed to separate goods trains from regular passenger services, allowing freight traffic to move more efficiently. The expansion is therefore expected to support faster cargo transportation, improve logistics efficiency and reduce pressure on conventional railway routes.
The new sections also have wider significance for industries located along the western part of the country. Better rail connectivity can help businesses move raw materials and finished products more efficiently while improving access to important commercial and port facilities.
The development forms part of India’s broader effort to modernise its railway infrastructure and build a more efficient logistics system. Faster and more reliable freight transportation is considered important for strengthening manufacturing, trade and supply chains.
With the latest sections becoming operational, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is set to play a larger role in India’s freight ecosystem.
The expansion marks another step towards creating a faster, more connected and logistics-driven railway network to support India’s economic growth.
