Data Centers Expand, but GDP Impact Remains Small

September 06/26/GTNS – New Delhi India’s data-center industry is witnessing rapid expansion, driven by rising demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital payments and online services. Despite the growing investments, however, the sector’s direct contribution to India’s GDP is expected to remain relatively small.

The bigger economic impact is likely to come indirectly. Banks, fintech companies, e-commerce platforms, technology firms and AI services increasingly depend on data centres for storage, computing and digital operations.

The industry is also creating opportunities for the power, construction, telecom and engineering sectors. Large facilities require reliable electricity, high-speed connectivity, specialised cooling systems and advanced security infrastructure.

The growing use of AI could further increase demand for high-capacity data infrastructure in the coming years. At the same time, high power consumption and environmental concerns are pushing operators towards renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies.

For India, the data-centre story is therefore less about its immediate GDP share and more about its role as the backbone of the digital economy. As businesses become increasingly technology-driven, the strategic importance of data infrastructure is expected to rise even if its direct contribution to national output remains modest.
