BHUBANESWAR: The prolonged teachers’ agitation at Lower PMG in Bhubaneswar has entered its 21st day, with thousands of teachers continuing their sit-in despite the scorching heat.
The protesters are seeking action on an eight-point charter of demands, including grant-in-aid for unaided schools and pension-related benefits. Teachers have been maintaining their presence at the protest venue, using umbrellas to shield themselves from the intense sun.
The continuing agitation drew government attention as Law, Works and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj and a team of legislators visited the protest site and interacted with the demonstrators.
Following the interaction, the Higher Education Minister said the issues would be addressed through discussions, signalling the government’s preference for dialogue to resolve the ongoing dispute.
With the protest now entering its fourth week, the focus has shifted to the outcome of the proposed discussions and whether they can pave the way for a settlement between the government and the protesting teachers.
