BHUBANESWAR, SEPTEMBER 5: On a day meant to celebrate the teaching community, thousands of teachers and employees continued their protest at Lower PMG in Bhubaneswar, keeping their long-pending demands firmly in the spotlight.The ongoing agitation has emerged as a major challenge for the Odisha government, with protesters maintaining that assurances alone will not be enough. Teachers under the Odisha School and College Teachers and Employees Coordination Committee have been demanding concrete decisions on several service-related issues.Among the key demands are government grants for eligible educational institutions, takeover of grant-in-aid schools and colleges, implementation of the Old Pension Scheme, pension and retirement benefits, removal of grade-pay discrepancies, six notional increments for eligible contractual teachers appointed between 2004 and 2013, and recruitment against vacant posts.The protesters’ central message is increasingly about written action rather than verbal assurance. Earlier, a meeting with government representatives failed to produce the written assurance sought by the protesting teachers, prompting them to continue their day-and-night demonstration.The agitation also comes against the backdrop of a separate recruitment-related protest by teacher aspirants. That group withdrew its sit-in on August 24 after the government assured that its demands would be addressed within four months. The aspirants had sought recruitment against vacant posts in government schools, special educator positions and Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas.With different sections of the teaching community raising employment, pension and service-condition concerns, the pressure is now on the government to demonstrate how quickly the assurances can translate into decisions.For the protesters at Lower PMG, however, the message remains unchanged: the classroom may be their workplace, but the streets have become their platform for demanding what they say is their due.
