Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 157th birth anniversary, highlighting truth, non-violence and fearlessness as central elements of the Mahatma’s legacy.

In a message shared on Gandhi Jayanti, Rahul Gandhi said Gandhi’s teachings encouraged people to remain firm in the face of injustice rather than surrendering to it. He described adherence to truth and non-violence as a form of strength.

Rahul Gandhi also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in New Delhi and attended the Sarva-Dharma Prarthana organised at Gandhi’s memorial, according to reports.

The Congress leader’s remarks came as the country observed Gandhi Jayanti through prayer meetings, commemorative programmes and tributes. The day marks Gandhi’s birth anniversary and is also observed internationally as the International Day of Non-Violence.

Gandhi’s philosophy of satya and ahimsa played a central role in his approach to India’s freedom movement. His emphasis on peaceful resistance and social harmony has remained an important part of public discussions surrounding his legacy.

Rahul Gandhi’s Gandhi Jayanti message therefore focused on the values he associated with Gandhi’s life—standing by truth, rejecting violence and maintaining courage when confronted with injustice.

The tribute was part of wider national observances on October 2, when political leaders and citizens across the country remembered Mahatma Gandhi and reflected on the principles associated with his public life.
