Captain Smit Machchhar was seriously injured during a cockpit confrontation, but his actions helped open the flight deck to others before the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia
GTNS | NEW DELHI | OCTOBER 1, 2026 , A routine international flight turned into a high-risk aviation emergency on Wednesday when an Indian captain was attacked inside the cockpit of a Flydubai aircraft travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
Captain Smit Machchhar, who was operating Flight FZ1073, suffered serious injuries during the confrontation with his co-pilot. Despite being wounded, he managed to unlock the cockpit door and raise the alarm, allowing passengers and crew members to enter the flight deck and restrain the attacker.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 subsequently made an emergency landing at Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia. Reports say 174 people were aboard the aircraft and all survived the incident. The aircraft had experienced a dramatic loss of altitude during the crisis.
What happened inside the cockpit
The exact sequence of events remains under investigation. Authorities and aviation officials have not yet established every detail surrounding the confrontation.
Reports identify the co-pilot as an Omani national. The United Arab Emirates has opened an investigation into the incident, including questions concerning the circumstances, motive and whether there was any prior planning.
There are also conflicting reports about the weapon used during the attack, with accounts referring to either a knife or the aircraft’s emergency crash axe. Investigators are expected to establish the precise details.
Passengers and reserve pilots become part of the emergency response
Once the cockpit door was opened, people on board moved quickly to contain the situation. Reports also indicate that relief pilots were travelling on the aircraft and subsequently helped stabilise the aircraft and complete the emergency landing.
That combination — the captain’s response, intervention by passengers and the presence of additional qualified pilots — became crucial during the emergency.
Captain recovering in Saudi Arabia
Machchhar was taken to a hospital in Tabuk for treatment. The Indian Embassy has said that officials are monitoring his condition and maintaining contact with his family. He has been reported to be stable and recovering.
Machchhar previously served with SpiceJet before joining Flydubai. Reuters reported that he had more than a decade of aviation experience and had trained in New Zealand early in his flying career.
Investigation shifts focus to cockpit security
The incident has raised questions about cockpit protection, crew screening and emergency procedures when a threat comes from inside the flight deck itself.
For now, investigators are examining the events rather than drawing final conclusions about the motive. The UAE has specifically said its inquiry will examine whether the incident involved terrorist activity or prior planning.
The dramatic episode has also placed the role of the Indian captain at the centre of international attention, after his actions during the confrontation helped create an opportunity for others to intervene.
