Global Times News | INDIA ; GTNS SEPTEMBER 22, 2026 | BHUBANESWAR Odisha Assembly Monsoon Session Begins With Tribute to Former Ministers, Legislators and Nepal Flood Victims Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi Moves Condolence Motion; Leaders Across Parties Pay Tribute and Observe One-Minute Silence BHUBANESWAR: The Monsoon Session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly began on Tuesday, September 22, in accordance with the scheduled programme, marking the commencement of the seventh session of the Seventeenth Odisha Legislative Assembly.The opening proceedings began at around 11 am after Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy reached the House. The proceedings commenced with the rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’, followed by the National Anthem.The first day of the session was marked by a solemn atmosphere as the House paid tribute to several former public representatives and also remembered those who lost their lives in the recent flood disaster in Nepal.Leader of the House and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi moved a condolence motion in memory of former ministers Dambur Majhi and Sushant Singh, former Government Chief Whip Satya Bhushan Sahu, and former members Ramamurti Gamang, Haji Mohammad Ayub Khan and Shivaji Majhi.While moving the motion, the Chief Minister recalled the public service and contributions of the deceased leaders and expressed grief over their passing. He also conveyed condolences to their bereaved families and prayed for peace for the departed souls.The House also expressed its condolences to the people who died in the recent flood disaster in Nepal. The inclusion of the disaster victims in the condolence proceedings reflected the Assembly’s expression of solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.The condolence motion received support from leaders representing different political groups in the Assembly. Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik, Congress Legislature Party leader Ram Chandra Kadam, the CPI leader, and Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy expressed their condolences and paid tribute to those remembered in the motion.Following the tributes, members of the House observed one minute of silence and offered a prayer for the peace of the departed souls.The opening proceedings therefore carried a sombre tone, with the Assembly setting aside political differences during the condolence proceedings to remember former legislators and other public figures who had passed away, as well as the victims of the Nepal flood disaster.With the formal opening and condolence proceedings completed, attention now turns to the substantive business of the Monsoon Session, where issues concerning Odisha and matters of public interest are expected to come up for discussion during the remaining sittings.
